Tourists visiting Tenerife will face a new eco-tax of Euro 25 to climb its most iconic landmark, Mount Teide, from January 1st. There will be strict daily capacity limits, with a maximum of 300 climbers per day. Visitors will be distributed into three time slots, and fines of Euro 600 will be charged for visiting without prior permission.
Mount Teide is Spain’s highest peak and a UNESCO World Heritage Site visited by millions of people each year. However, it has become so overcrowded with blocked access roads that the island’s government says it has to balance tourism with conservation.
